Classic Event Viewer Retires

Posted by By Papertrail Team on June 7, 2021

The classic event viewer, introduced in June 2011, has been the heart of SolarWinds® Papertrail. It’s where we spend most of our time, searching, tailing, and sharing event data. Over the last 10 years, Papertrail fans across the globe have shared their ideas with our development team and helped us improve and refine the event viewer.

And What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been

Starting as just a real-time stream of events with a fast search, we quickly added the abilities to search via dates, detect new systems automatically, pause and restart live tail, and send alerts. After a few years and input from the Papertrail community, the classic event viewer expanded to include threshold alerts, filtering, click to search, and context links in the log messages.

Papertrail event viewer started as a real-time stream of events

With every piece of feedback and every conversation with a Papertrail user, we explored ways to make the classic event viewer even more awesome without making it complicated or hard to use.

The log velocity graph is a great example. Papertrail fans asked for a way to visually explore changes in log volume to help them spot when problems started. Our developers heard that and thought it’d be cool to not only see the volume of events but also to use the graph as a way to navigate to a specific time to view the events. Et voila! Log velocity analytics came to be. Like just about everything in Papertrail, it’s simple, powerful, and a result of collaboration between Papertrail users and our development team.

Saying Goodbye

On June 1, 2021, the classic Papertrail event viewer officially entered retirement. With these fond memories, we say goodbye to the classic Papertrail event viewer and welcome in the new event viewer.
